GIS @ UC San Diego: Data that's not GIS Data yet, but could be...

Offering great info about GIS@UCSD including tutorials, GIS data, books, course-specific GIS guides and more, we hope this site helps you better incorporate GIS into your work. Come see us in the Lab or online at http://libraries.ucsd.edu/gis!

Tables, Databases and More

GIS data can be created from any number of sources, and the common ones include tables.  These might be Excel tables, text files, csv files, or come straight out of a database.  Remember, just because you are looking for 'GIS data' doesn't mean your data might first arrive at your fingers in another format!

As always, ask your GIS Lab staff for assistance in finding the information that you need.

Census Data from Geolytics

Geolytics is a commercial software and data provider that has packaged Census data for the United States for use.  At UC San Diego, all Geolytics software and data can be accessed from the DataCruncher machine located in the Data & GIS Lab.  The most important thing to remember is:

1) YOU MUST USE THE APPROPRIATE DISK AS WELL AS THE INSTALLED SOFTWARE IN ORDER FOR GEOLYTICS TO WORK.  DISKS ARE LOCATED ON THE SPINNING RACK IN THE DATA & GIS LAB AND THE CALL NUMBER FOR EACH DISK IS BELOW.

2) READ THE USER GUIDE BEFORE ASKING FOR ASSISTANCE PLEASE!

3) BRING YOUR OWN MEDIA TO STORE THE OUTPUTS.

If you are using Geolytics with the intention of bringing the data into a GIS, you should save your files as in either dbf or csv format.
