Searching Quick Tips

Tips that Work in Most Search Engines

If looking for some information about teen obesity what is the best term to use - pediatric obesity or teen obesity?  What about adolescent obesity?  Which one is the best?  How about all of them - skip the multiple searches and  round up all of them into one string, such as:

adolescent OR pediatric OR teen  AND obesity

This is such a broad topic that you might lose some of the really key resources for all the other web pages out there.  Cut to the chase by limiting your results to organizations or governmental agencies.  From prevention to intervention activities to physician resources or great patient resources, most of it will start with either an org or gov, so try limiting to them first.  Add one of the following to the end of the previous search string:

site:org

site:gov

If there is a key organization that should cover the topic, try your internet search with the organizations name.  For example, what if you needed some thoughts on social media plans for children or teenagers.  Is there a peds organization that might have some advice?  You might think about the American Academy of Pediatrics and include them in your search.  For example, try a search like

media plan AND american academy of pediatrics

Obesity is such a huge issue that there are many (lots!) organizations and governmental departments (see below) that dedicate a great deal of effort to preventing obesity and its comorbidities.  Perhaps the most well know one is the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC).  They have a big prevention effort (among other things, Healthy People 2010 & 2020).  Find it all with a simple search like adding the following to the first search string about teens & obesity:

site:cdc.gov

National Organizations

So many organizations -- individual patient oriented (including local resources) to research related to national organization or even government organizations -- how to pick?  Don't forget the tips above to help identify info from specific organizations (site:...), and here are a few suggestions organizations to start with.

More on Guidelines

Sometimes, PubMed is the place to go to look for practice guidelines - especially if you are unsure of which organizations might have published some.  If you have been following some of the tips, you know that there are filters for publication types with one being Practice Guidelines.

Learning More about Apps

Is there a good app for that?  One of the more reliable review sites for apps is iMedicalApps and it often comes from a medical point of view.
