Note: Don't forget that if your question has anything to do with a drug or type of drugs, that one of the drug resources is a great place to get concise information. Check out the Drug Info Resources tab. |

PTSDpubs
This new(ish) database is available from the National Center for PTSD and gathers information about publications world-wide that cover PTSD.
One note to help you quickly sort through the information is to use their Subject category to narrow things down. For example, in a search for alcohol screening:
Using the subject, americans, limits the results to ones that are most pertinent. There are a number of interesting articles - for example, the one from 2013 titled Differences in what happens after you screen positive for depression versus hazardous alcohol use. Use the UC-eLinks button to get to full text.
The ICU Book
Before we had the online version, I used to put the Acid-Base section of this book on e-reserves. Section 9 of this book has a great section explaining acid-base, its calculations, and as well, the anion gap. If your question is about that aspect of the case this week, this is a great resource for explaining these issues.
Point of Care - Decision Support Tools
In addition to the background information found in the textbooks, the point of care (synthesized) information resources are going to have some great "pearls" for you this week. While general psychiatry is not extensively covered in these tools, they do have some good info on PTSD.
National Organizations
A few key organizations that may have both patient and physician information.
Smoking Cessation Resources
You may already be familiar with these resources, but sometimes a reminder helps.
Alcohol Screening Resources
There are a couple of different ways to assess a patient's alcohol use, one is known as CAGE (not really in use any more), and another is AUDIT or AUDIT-C.
Alcohol Recovery Groups
There are 2 different groups offering free alchololic support groups in the San Diego area, alcoholics anonymous & smart recovery.
VA Resources
Find more VA information online. Sometimes it helps to give Google an idea of the types of resources you want it to return. So, if you want to see what the VA has about PTSD, you can specify. Try
ptsd site:va.gov
The VA also has some good screening information
Looking up information about the results of lab tests are mostly background questions. The following resources are easy to use tools to find very reliable information about the normal values, reference ranges, and more.
MedlinePlus is a great place to find consumer-friendly materials along with directories, a dictionary & encyclopedia, and more. Take a look and see what you find - try hyperkalemia.
