Web VPN: On Campus but Can't Access an Article or Database?

A quick tutorial on using UCSD's web VPN

Possible Reason

Occasionally, when on campus, the full text of an article will not be available when it should.  Sometimes, it is a problem with the publisher, sometimes, it is because ACMS has opened new wireless IP addresses (for some of the new buildings) and we are working with the publishers to get the new IP addresses added. Sometimes, the reason is unknown.  When access issues happen, please let us know via our Ask a Librarian service.  Also, for an immediate work around, you can try the following trick.

What To Do Now?

If you need a resource and your laptop is not letting you get to it, the following is a quick solution using the web VPN.  (Alternatively, log in to the desktop VPN - set up instructions available) .  If you are denied access, do the following:

  1. Copy the URL of the resource you want to use.
  2. Open a new tab or window in your browser.
  3. Go to the web VPN (vpn.ucsd.edu) and login. (Leave setting for Easy Connect).
  4. On the web VPN's home page, past the copied URL in the address box & click Browse.
see the web VPN Basics tab for details

You should have no trouble access the resource you need.
