BICD 110: Cell Biology: Navigate Bioinformatics Resources

Using NCBI Bioinformatics Tools & Databases

NCBI

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) advances science and health by providing access to biomedical and genomic information. Use NCBI resources to explore genomic and protein sequences, variations, gene functions, and chemical properties.

GQuery

Search over 30 NCBI bioinformatics databases simultaneously. Search by keyword (e.g. gene symbol, chemical name) to explore your topic from several molecular perspectives at once.

Sample searches:

1. [a gene symbol] CFTR
2. [a chemical] phenylalanine

BLAST

BLAST is the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool used for comparing primary biological sequence information. BLAST uses an algorithm to compare the similarity of a query sequence to the multitude of varied sequences stored in a library of databases, including GenBank and Protein Data Bank.

Sample searches:

1. [a Nucleotide accession number] NC_000017.11
2. [protein FASTA sequence]
