Mathematics & Statistics: Find Books

Guide to research for advanced undergraduate, graduate students and mathematicians

Mathematics and Statistics Books @ UCSD

We have an extensive collection of books (print and ebooks) that cover engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, and related disciplines.

UC Library Search

UC Library Search, accessible from the search box on the library's homepage, helps you locate books, film, music, maps, and various other materials at the UC San Diego Library and beyond. It also contains a limited number of online journal and newspaper articles. You may search by keyword, title, and author, and filter your search to what is available online, or peer-reviewed articles. You can also place an interlibrary loan request through UC Library Search for materials at other UC campuses or libraries worldwide using your Single Sign-On credentials.

UC Library Search does not include all the content to which the Library subscribes. To extend your search for articles and research papers AND to fully use advanced features (Cited by, Institution search, controlled subject search)  use databases like Web of Science or INSPEC or MathSciNet or ACM Guide to Computing Literature or SciFinder.

The Roger and Melvyl catalogs were retired on July 27, 2021.

UC Library Search search hints for finding books

If you don't have an author or title, start with the keyword search.

If you want to search for textbooks, just add textbooks to the keyword search (regression textbooks)

Searching time series is the same as time and series, and will retrieve only records with both terms.

Searching time OR series will retrieve records with at least one term, giving you a larger set of results, often less precise.

To search for words with the same root but different endings: truncate

Use model* to search model, models, modelling, modeling, etc.

Search results are displayed by relevance first.. You can change this to sort by date, by author, title.

If you find a book you like, note the Library of Congress subject headings used for that book. Click to find more titles (and change the subject search from exact to contains).

Note the book's location; your book might be at WongAvery or out at the Library Annex. Use Request to have the book sent to the library of your choice.

Note the book's availability. If it's checked out, login to UC Library Search, then use Request to place a hold (recalls of books has been suspended).  Use Request an Interlibrary loan to request the book from another UC Library and other academic, research, or public libraries.  ILL from outside UC may take 2 weeks to 2 months depending on the title. Search San Diego Circuit to request print books that may be held at local public libraries.

If you see >> Go to electronic version in the record, these are links to get to an e-book.

UC Library Search also has journal articles but there's no controlled subject terms and it's not as extensive as our STEM article databases.   If you don't see an article listed in UC Library Search, you can search for journals by title or ISSN.
