About Beilstein & Gmelin

Beilstein and Gmelin are databases of organic, inorganic and organometallic compounds:  structures, reactions and physical/chemical property data.

  • Search compounds in Beilstein and Gmelin by chemical name, molecular formula or CAS registry number.

  • Draw structures, substructures or reactions with the structure editor.

  • Each reaction and property data "fact" is accomanied by one or more literature references (mostly journal articles, some older patents). Use the full-text link next to the reference to connect to the online article if available, or the library catalog to check print holdings.

  • Beilstein and Gmelin are based on handbook series indexing the chemical literature and data going back to 1780 and 1800 respectively.

  • Because they index a small number of journals and there are no abstracts before 1979, Beilstein and Gmelin are not ideal for keyword/topic searching. SciFinder, Web of Science and PubMed are recommended databases for keyword and topic-based searching.
