MMW 13: New Ideas and Cultural Encounters: Topic Selection

Selecting and Narrowing a Topic

Selecting a good research topic can be difficult, but here are a few tips to help you narrow your focus:

  • Choose a topic that interests you. This makes it much easier to do the research and writing required for your assignments.
  • Keep the scope of your topic manageable. You don't want a topic that is so broad your sources don't relate to each other, but you also don't want a topic that is so narrow you can't find many or any sources at all.
  • View the video below to get an overview on how to develop a good research topic.
  • Use the tabs for the MMW High Use Shelves and Online Encyclopedias to help you narrow down your topic choices.
