PubMed includes two main streams of records for journal articles:
- Records from about 5200 biomedical journals selected by the National Library of Medicine (part of the NIH). This set of curated journals is called the "MEDLINE" collection.
- Journals and manuscripts deposited into PubMed Central, an open-access repository that authors use to comply with NIH mandates to publish taxpayer-funded research openly.
For this course, you are encouraged to focus on journals that are part of PubMed's curated journal selection. Here's how to limit your search to those:
1. Do a search, any search. On the results page, scroll to the bottom of the Filters list on the left side of the screen. Click the "Additional Filters" button. You'll see this panel - at the bottom of the screen is an option for OTHER (falls below this screenshot):

2. On the filter panel, choose the OTHER option. There are two filters here: one for the MEDLINE subset of journals, and one that excludes all preprints regardless of the journal:
