Mendeley Citation Management: UCSD Specific Notes

Mendeley Accounts - Chrome Profile Problem

If you used your UCSD email to create your Mendeley account AND are using the Chrome browser using a Chrome profile attached to your UCSD Google account, Mendeley can get confused by this and direct you to Single Sign On as if you were trying to access other products from their parent company.. This is an error - we do have licenses for many Elsevier products, but we do not have an institutional account for Mendeley, and your UCSD Single-Sign-On credentials will not work with Mendeley.

This will affect...

  • Account creation screen
  • Login to your online library
  • Login process for the Web Importer citation capture browser extension.

Current solutions if you encounter this:

  • Log out of your UCSD-associated profile in Chrome, or use a different Chrome profile.
  • Use an Incognito window - this will work for accessing your library, but doesn't seem to work for the Web Importer capture tool.
  • Use Mendeley in a different browser such as Firefox
  • Change the email associated with your account to something other than UCSD.

This issue does seem to be intermittent which makes it hard to diagnose and resolve.

Mendeley and UCSD-Licensed Word (Office365)

The method for installing the Mendeley Cite add-in for Microsoft Word depends on which version of Word you are using, and in many cases, who you are.

If you are using your own personally purchased/licensed copy of Word, such as a copy that came with a computer you purchased, the directions that Mendeley provides should work for you.

However....

If you use a UCSD-licensed copy of Word via Office365, this may be slightly different.

Staff, faculty or a graduate student in a department that uses Microsoft Exchange

Mendeley's instructions for obtaining the add-in via the Microsoft App Store should work for you.

If you get an error message that you are not allowed to use the AppStore: contact your departmental IT support and ask them to make a request from Campus IT to "whitelist" the Mendeley Citation add-in to Microsoft word for your department or group. The Library cannot do this.

Undergraduate or a grad student in a department that does NOT use Exchange

You will need to contact campus IT yourself and request an individual Exchange account so that you can install this Mendeley plugin.  [The reason for this is that most student accounts "live" in the Google/Gmail ecosystem and are not "provisioned" with Exchange accounts by default.  However, these accounts can be provided by request if needed for something like Mendeley that relies on it.]
