The amount of scholarly literature is growing exponentially. As a researcher and scholar in your field, it is important to distinguish your body of research and scholarly works from other authors, for example to demonstrate impact to funding bodies or to facilitate collaborations with other researchers. This can be challenging particularly for authors with common surnames and with the various ways of denoting a person's name. There are several tools available to help you disambiguate yourself from other researchers and to compile and showcase your own work for the scholarly community at large.
The Open Researcher Community ID is an increasingly recognized persistent digital identifier. The unique number assigned to you will allow publishers and aggregators of scholarly literature to distinguish you from researchers with similar names. In fact, ORCID numbers are increasingly required by publishers and funders when you submit a manuscript for publication or apply for grant funding. This is a powerful tool in author disambiguation and it takes just a few minutes to sign up. Have questions? Contact visit a librarian for more information about getting started.
The Web of Knowledge features ResearcherID, a service with which you can create and manage your scholarly profile, generate citation metrics and connect with other scholars. ResearcherID, in tandem with ORCID, assigns a unique ID to each author and allows authors to identify papers that they contributed to.
