How to Narrow with the Faceting Menu

THIS LINKED GOOGLE DOCUMENT POINTS TO THE IMPORTANCE OF USING THE FACETING MENU IN UC LIBRARY SEARCH (FOUND ON THE LEFT) TO NARROW RESULTS BY VARIOUS CRITERIA

NARROWING BY LANGUAGE:

Once the selection is made (by clicking on the desired facet), the results will change to include only materials matching the selected criteria.  In this case, it will only show titles in Spanish:

Note also the options to change the

  • "Sort by" critera from relevance to newest date first, oldest date first, and more
  • "Show Only" Available online, Peer-reviewed journals, and more
  • Resource (Format) Type to Book, Article, etc.

NARROWING BY LOCATION:

As with language, once the selection is made (by clicking on the desired facet), the results will change to include only

materials matching the selected criteria ( [all print] journals; current journals; maps )

Please note that the Resource Type will often change accordingly (in this case to journals or maps)

How to identify a library item's location by the catalog record

In Academic Libraries, materials are generally organized by subject and format, rather than genre or language.  In Public Libraries this may be different; materials may be separated by language and there are generally different sections for fiction and non fiction as well as by the reader's age/reading level (Children's/Juvenile, Young Adult, Adult).

Academic libraries also use a different classification system (Library of Congress) than Public Libraries.  Both systems use call numbers to allow users to find the location of the materials in the Library Catalog (either by going to the sections of circulating materials themselves or requesting that someone retrieve them).

In UC Library Search, the record for a book indicates its format above the title and its location (online OR section of the library and classification [call] #) below it.
