Citation generators are tools in which you use a DOI or type the information regarding the citation (instead of pulling directly from a database or catalog) - they usually have a form to help guide you in what information is needed.

Many students who are conducting research for topical papers find that manually tracking references and using a citation generator is sufficient. While researchers often find that when they are doing extensive research or studying a topic for a length of time, a citation management tool is worth the investment in learning how to use the software and purchasing.
