Citation Management - EndNote Online: Troubleshooting

EndNote Online, the web version of the EndNote citation management program, is available free for UC students, academics & staff. It is used to collect, organize, and share references & easily format and change citation styles.

Troubleshooting: Cite While You Write and Word

Cite While You Write is a plugin that you can install into your copy of Microsoft Word to help you insert citations into the document you are writing, and then finalize your bibliography formatted in the style you need.  However, folks using EndNote Online (aka Endnote Web) often encounter an error message after installing it when using it for the first time.

EndNote Online (aka EndNote Web) is freely available at UC San Diego through our subscriptions to other databases from this vendor.  But the vendor also sells a separate, paid desktop software application, and that is often what is set as the default when this plugin is installed, and this causes an error message if you don't have that software installed. Here's the fix:

In Word, find the EndNote tab on the ribbon. If this isn't here, your installation didn't work correctly. Click on Preferences:

EndNote Plugin, where to find Preferences Panel

Within the Preferences panel, select the Application tab

EndNote Plugin Preferences panel

Select EndNote Online from the pulldown and then fill in your username and your account password for EndNote Online. (Note, this is NOT your UCSD single-sign on - this is an account you create at myendnoteweb.com and select your own password.
