Step 2: How to add references to your accountThere are several ways to get references into EndNote, below are the 4 main methods (for examples & screenshots see the link above):
1. Type all information from each of your references into a template, which is found in EndNote Online's "New Reference" list of many templates, available from the "Collect" top tab. This method is very time consuming, prone to errors, and not recommended except as a last resort, e.g. for reference types such as Blogs, Maps, Personal Communication, etc. not for more common formats such as Journal Article. or Book, or Web Page, etc.
2. A much more efficient, and less error prone, method is to directly export references that you have found from searching databases or online catalogs, such as Web of Science, BIOSIS, and UC Library Search. This enables the saving of records (exporting) directly into EndNote rather than having to save to a file on the desktop and then importing the file into EndNote. It saves a few clicks.
3. Search for your desired references in an article database, such as Earth, EconLit, GeoRef, Google Scholar, PsycInfo, PubMed, SciFinder, Sociological Abstracts, then Download selected references to your computer and Import them into EndNote.
4. Use EndNote's Online Search feature to search library catalogs, or some article databases from within EndNote.
Which of the above is best to use?
· For a complex or comprehensive search, methods 2 or 3 are the preferred ones because they are more powerful and accurate in retrieving citations.
· The Online Search, from within EndNote works for a few databases and is good for known items, i.e., author(s) and a specific article, or for a book in the library’s catalog
Once you have collected your references, EndNote can help you easily insert a citation in the text of your document, format it following one of over 7,000 citations styles (standard styles such as APA, Chicago, MLA, etc. and many specific journal styles) and also automatically generate a bibliography at the end of your document, if you are using MS Word and EndNote's "Cite While You Write" plug-in.
