LIGN 143: The Structure of Spanish: Choosing a Spanish Dialect & Finding Physical Sources

Finding Resources

3 ways to find the resources you need for your project:

In-Person Browsing of Library Collection:

The classification number for linguistics books about Spanish dialects ranges around PC4711 - PC4911.  Visit the 7th floor of Geisel Library, find PC4711, and you can browse the shelves for a particular dialect.

Online Browsing of Library Collection:

Browse what we have online first, then go find the specific book on the 7th floor.

In UC Library Search, use the Advanced Search option and select the SUBJECT field to search Spanish language -- Dialects. You can browse a list of the physical resources we have. The link provided will give you a broad list of ALL Spanish dialects, but it's better if you already have a country in mind and then you can add " -- country" after it.

Examples:

  • Spanish language[space]--[space]Dialects[space]--[space]Cuba                                 (Spanish language -- Dialects -- Cuba)
  • Spanish language[space]--[space]Dialects[space]--[space]United[space]States         (Spanish language -- Dialects -- United States)

Be sure you have selected SUBJECT in the dropdown before the search box.

Online Search for a Dialect
  1. Search around online to decide what dialect or country you'd like to choose. I recommend choosing a few just in case the library doesn't have a physical resource for that dialect.
  2. Go to the library homepage and either:
  • use the Advanced Search subject heading structure explained above to search that country OR
  • Type the dialect you want in the keyword search to see if we have anything

Additional Information

  • If the resource says Offsite (SRLF) or Offsite (Annex), that means the book is in our offsite storage facility. Just click on the title and select REQUEST to have the book sent to Geisel for you. It usually take 4 days or less.

  • If there is a resource you really want and the UC San Diego Library doesn't have it, fill out this form or email a Librarian and an order can be placed. It may take up to 14 days for it to come in.
    • You can also use UC Library Search to place a request. Search for any title and click "Request through Interlibrary Loan." We will borrow that text from another library and have it sent to Geisel for you. That may take up to 7 days, depending on where it is coming from.

For any questions or issues, email a Librarian.
