Clinical Essentials: Your Guide to Medical Literature

What You Need to Know

UpToDate offers evidence-based support for clinical care and drug decisions.

UC San Diego Health employees can connect in two ways:


Option 1: Network access

  1. Join the UC San Diego network:
  2. Go to uptodate.com.

Option 2: Personal account

  1. Join the UC San Diego network (same as Option 1 step 1).
  2. Go to uptodate.com, click Register, and complete the form.
  3. After registering, sign in with your UpToDate credentials from any internet connection – no campus network or VPN required.

To keep your account active, sign in on campus or via VPN at least once every 90 days.

UC San Diego Health employees have full access — on campus or off.

First, connect to the UC San Diego campus network. Then access our articles, e‑books, databases, and more.


On Campus

  1. Connect to the campus network. Join UCSD-PROTECTED Wi-Fi, use a campus workstation, or plug into Ethernet.
  2. Open any library resource. Click a link on a library page, or go to UC Library Search and search for your item.

Tip: For quick access to popular clinical titles, visit the Online Clinical Library.


Off Campus

You have three options to access library resources from home or off campus.

Option 1: UC Library Search

  1. Go to UC Library Search and sign in with your Active Directory (AD) credentials.
  2. Search for the title or topic, and check the View Online section in a record.

Option 2: Journal, e-Book, or Database Sites

  1. Open a journal, e‑book, or database page.
  2. Click Sign in Through My Institution, or Access via OpenAthens, or a similar link.
  3. Search for and select University of California San Diego. Choose OpenAthens Federation if prompted.
  4. Sign in with your Active Directory (AD) credentials.

Option 3: VPN Connection

Some resources – including UpToDate and Lexidrug – require a VPN connection for off-campus access.

  1. Set up your VPN connection following the directions in Connect to Library Resources.
  2. After connecting to the VPN, visit a library resource.

Tip: After connecting, register personal accounts for UpToDate and Lexidrug to access them from any network.

Search for articles

  • Use databases like PubMed (UC San Diego) or Embase to find articles on your topic.
  • Click the 'Get it at UC' button in a search result to locate the full article.
