LIGN 152: Indigenous Languages of the Americas: Grammar Project

Grammar Project

Below is a list of suggested languages with corresponding reference grammars that you can choose from for your language reports. You are also welcome to pick a language that is not on this list but that has a reference grammar, though you are strongly encouraged to consult with the instructor about this before submitting your language proposal. Tips on how to find other grammars are below the following list. Grammars below with links link to outside websites or to the library catalog record where you can access a digital copy of the grammar through an online reader. If you are not on campus, you will need to use the campus VPN to access these resources online. A few grammars can be checked out from Geisel (the link to the library catalog record is also provided here).

Off-Campus Access

If you are off campus:

To access many of our resources that are not available to the general public, you must use VPN/Cisco Anyconnect to access them.

If you are on-campus:

Be sure you are connected on the campus network, either via ResNet in the residence halls or campus apartments, or the UCSD-PROTECTED Wifi Network elsewhere on campus. Do not use the UCSD Guest Wifi network; it will not connect you to our electronic resources.

Finding Resources

Ways to find the resources you need for your assignment:

Want to see what there is to choose from?

Browse the lists below.

Want to search for a specific language?

If you need help choosing a language first:

  • Glottolog - a comprehensive catalog of the world's languages, language families and dialects.

Tip: Choose a few languages, just in case we don't have a book on that grammar.

Search to see what books exist for the language you want:

If UC San Diego Library has the book, you'll see the call number listed and you can request it online.

If UC San Diego Library does not have the book, but you really want to write about it, you can click the gold Request button and we'll borrow it from another library for you, for free. (May take up to 1-2 weeks to be delivered.)

For either:

In-Person Browsing:

The classification number for linguistics books about the languages of the Americas ranges from PM101 - PM7356.  Visit the 7th floor of Geisel Library, find PM101, and you can browse the shelves for a particular grammar.

Also browse the University of California Publications in Linguistics series on the 7th floor under P25.C25.
