MMW 122: Exploring the Modern World: Finding Full Text

What should I do if I'm having trouble using the VPN on my device?

Try looking at the tips on our page for troubleshooting VPN problems.

Do I have to use UC Library Search or the library's databases to look for my articles?

No. The library's resources are available if you want to use them, but you can search for appropriate sources in any way you want.

What should I do if I keep hitting paywalls when I try to access the full text of articles on the approved newspapers' websites?

Many news sites will limit the number of articles you can view for free (e.g., 5 per month) or will limit how long an article is freely available after it's published (e.g., free for 2 weeks). If you find an interesting article, remember to save it to a PDF just in case it drops behind a paywall. You can also try locating the article in Factiva.

What should I do if I found an article on a newspaper site, but can't find the full text in Factiva?

Sometimes the information about an article is changed slightly when it is entered into the library's databases. Often it is the title that is a bit different. In cases like this, we recommend searching for the author's name instead of the article title.

How can I access full text articles from the New York Times? I don't have a subscription

Starting in 2022, Associated Students UCSD and UC San Diego Library have partnered to bring complimentary NYTimes.com access to current students, faculty, and staff. For instructions on how to get your subscription, see our Newspaper LibGuide.

How can I print an article on the New York Times website?

The NYT site recommends using the print feature on your web browser to print or save to PDF. If you're using the NYT app, click the Share button, copy the link to a browser and use the print feature on your browser.
