Chemical Prices, Companies, and Industry Information: Trade Magazines

Trade/Professional Magazines

Trade magazines can be good sources for news about the chemical industry, and you may find the price information you need. But they can be tricky to search. Below are some of the primary trade/professional publications for chemistry and chemical engineering, with suggested databases where you can search or (in some cases) browse the issues.

Publication Best Access

ICIS Chemical Business

Weekly 1-2 page economic profiles of various chemicals for the US, Asia, Europe, Latin America. So a individual profile would be something like Europe PVC or Asia Methanol. 

Each Chemical Profile includes uses, supply/demand, prices, technology and outlook. 

NexisUni

Select A Publication, enter your chemical or the word profile, and then under Find Publication type ICIS Chemical Business, or Chemical Publications to include other publications. You can sort to find the most recent chemical profile. You cannot browse the magazine well.

Chemical Engineering

The Chemical Engineering Plant Cost Index (CEPCI), published monthly. The CEPCI is a composite index assembled from four sub-indexes: Equipment; Construction Labor; Buildings; and Engineering & Supervision. How the CEPCI is calculated.

ProQuest

Can be searched or browsed independently, or searched with other publications via Materials Science & Engineering Database). The CEPCI and other indicators are on a page called Economic Indicators or Current Trends, usually found at the end of the issue.

Chemical Engineering Progress

Trade publication from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE)

ProQuest

Can be searched or browsed independently, or searched with other publications via ABI Inform Trade & Industry or Materials Science & Engineering Database)

Also: Factiva. You can limit your search to CEP, or expand to view results from other news sources and chemical industry publications.

C&EN Global Enterprise

The version of Chemical & Engineering News. available to institutions with ACS journals access. Annual features include: World Chemical Outlook, Employment and Salary Survey, Global Top 50.

ACS Publications

ACS still maintains the original C&EN website, which has more of a news magazine format. However, access without a membership is more limited.

ENR: Engineering News-Record

Construction economics section, with various indicators, including total construction (private vs public, residential vs nonresidential, construction cost indices for 20 cites (not San Diego); and material prices for pvc pipe, plywood, aluminum sheeting, and cement. Many of the appear every 2-4 issues. 

ProQuest

Can be searched or browsed independently, or searched with other publications via ABI/INFORM Trade & Industry or Materials Science & Engineering Database.  The Construction Economics page should be near the end of the issue

Current Journals, Geisel West Commons (print only)

Indexed in ABI/Inform Trade & Industry and Materials Science & Engineering Database, but full text access ceased in 2012.

Some oil and gas industry metrics, including US gas production and world liquid fuel supply and demand.

EBSCO
