Marine Biodiversity & Conservation - MAS Program: GIS & Data

Library guide to resources in marine biodiversity and conservation

GIS License Access

UC San Diego has a campus-wide license for Esri's ArcGIS software. Current UC San Diego affiliates can access Esri Resources using their AD credentials. If you are a UC San Diego Extension student, contact your professor for access. Our Esri software license does not permit members of the public, or past or future UC San Diego community members to use the software and associated data.

Creating an ArcGIS account

Whenever you use Esri or ArcGIS resources, UC San Diego affiliates with a UCSD email account should sign in using the "Your ArcGIS organization's URL" login and the “ucsdonline” as the organization’s address URL. Your affiliation with UC San Diego’s ArcGIS Online organization gives you access to resources that are not otherwise available to someone outside of an organization.

Visit:  www.arcgis.com

Once you have gone through the UC San Diego SSO Login (dual authentication may be required) you will be redirected to the UC San Diego ArcGIS Online Organization homepage.

ucsdonline.maps.arcgis.com

Note:  Just because you can sign on to ArcGIS Online, does not mean you are affiliated with the UC San Diego AGO. Public accounts exist, but these accounts do not have access to all the training resources, and additional apps (Community Analyst, Business Analyst, etc.). Check the URL and ensure that you are connected to the UC San Diego Org. If you don't see the following in the URL: ucsdonline.maps.arcgis.com, you are not signed into the UC San Diego Org.

ArcGIS StoryMaps & Dashboards

ArcGIS StoryMaps and ArcGIS Dashboards are part of the Esri ecosystem and are platforms that enable one to publish their geospatial analysis and findings in and interactive way.

ArcGIS Dashboards allow users to create and share interactive visualizations and real-time data views. These dashboards are often used to communicate key insights by displaying maps, charts, graphs, gauges, and other visual elements on a single screen.

ArcGIS StoryMaps combines maps with multimedia content like text, photos, and videos to create immersive, web-based narratives. Students can use it to tell stories around their research, with geographic context provided by maps.
