About tests and how to find them

Tests and Measures

This guide will help you find information about tests in psychology and education, and how to locate the tests.

Tests and measures are used by professionals in psychology, education, and other fields. Students may also need to research and find tests for class assignments.

In addition to the terms test and measure, other terms may be used in the literature, e.g., questionnaire, survey, scale, checklist, instrument or inventory.

There are two categories of tests: published and unpublished.

  • Published tests must be purchased from a test publisher and often can only be purchased by a qualified professional who has permission to use the test.
  • Unpublished tests can be found appended to journal articles, books or dissertations. Request permission to use the test and obtain a copy from the author/creator of the test.

For more information about tests see the American Psychological Association's FAQ/Finding Information About Psychological Tests.

Remember, finding tests takes time! Start your research early to avoid a lot of frustration.
