About tests and how to find them

Tests and Measures

Tests and measures are used by professionals in psychology, education, and other fields. Students may also need to research and find tests for class assignments.

In addition to the terms test and measure, other terms may be used in the literature, e.g., questionnaire, survey, scale, checklist, instrument, or inventory.

There are two categories of tests: published and unpublished.

  • Published tests must be purchased from a test publisher and often can only be purchased by a qualified professional with permission to use the test.
  • Unpublished tests can be found appended to journal articles, books, or dissertations—request permission to use the test and obtain a copy from the author/creator of the test.

Remember, finding tests takes time! Start your research early to avoid a lot of frustration.
